Born on 19th February, 1925 in a Small Village Gondur, around 3Km from Dhule. Dhule is a small district town near Chalisgaon Junction.
He earned Diploma in Sculpture with a Gold Medal from Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai in 1952. He works with ease and mastery in bronze. He has been wallowing in the rich arena of realistic sculptures and has been recognized by various Countries and Artists from all over the world.
Ram V. Sutar served in the Department of Archaeology from 1954 to 1958 as a modeller for restoration work of sculptures at Ellora and Ajanta Caves where he has restored many of the sculptures. Then he joined Department of Audio-Visual Publicity, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, New Delhi as Technical Assistant (Model) in the Exhibition Division and worked there till 1959.
In 1959 he decided to work as a freelance sculptor and made two sculptures for the main gate for Agriculture Fair, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Unassuming and soft spoken Ram takes delight in executing gigantic monumental works. His first triumph was the Chambal Symbolic monument at the Gandhi Sagar Dam.
The statue of Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant overlooking Rafi Marg, New Delhi bears an ample testimony of Ram V. Sutar's creative genius. The magnificent 10 feet. high bronze statue is a proof enough of the artist's marvellous skill and flawless execution
With the encouragement of Shri M.S. Randhawa, ICS, the then Vice Chancellor of Punjab University and an Art Connoisseur and Critic, Ram Sutar has completed two gigantic statues about 20 feet high of Goddess Ganga and Yamuna at Rose Garden, Ludhiana and Mandi Gobindgarh in the state of Punjab. Words fail to describe these works which are only to be seen to be believed.
Ram V. Sutar has exhibited his works at a number of National and International fairs in India. His bust of Mahatma Gandhi has been highly appreciated and has been selected for installation in many countries including France, Italy, Argentina, Barbados, Russia, England, Malaysia and Caracas on the occasion of Gandhi Centenary Celebrations. His Sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi has been installed in more than fifty different countries.
Ram V. Sutar has made more than 150 monumental sculptures in last sixty years. Many of the statues adorn the Parliament house, New Delhi including 16 feet high Mahatma Gandhi's statue in meditation pose, 18 feet high statues of Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Smt. Indira Gandhi, Maulana Azad, Sardar Patel, Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Shivaji Maharaj, Jai Prakash Narain, Bhagat Singh, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, Hemu Kalani, Vithal Bhai Patel, Shahuji Maharaj, Babu Jagjiwan Ram and Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant.
His sculptures are installed in different parts of India and all over the world including USA, Europe and Asian Countries. Ram V. Sutar has been honoured with many National awards. In 1999 he was awarded PADMASHREE for his contribution in the field of sculpting by the then President of India, Shri K.R Narayanan. His works have been appreciated in India and also all over the world. Artists from all over the world have visited his studio to see and learn the techniques of sculpting. Many have compared his works to the mastery of Rodin and Michelangelo.
Anil Ram Sutar son of Shri Ram V. Sutar is a born Sculptor and Painter. Since his early childhood he has been helping & making sculptures. During his stay in USA, he made portraits, sculptures & paintings. He has a Bachelor of Architecture from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi and Masters Degree in Architecture and Urban Design from Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Anil Sutar has designed several internationally acclaimed projects in USA, Middle East, Nigeria. A born sculptor with knowledge of Architecture and Engineering, he has been able to amalgamate the three skills together to visualize and create large scaled projects. Since 1994 he is working with Ram Sutar and together they have expanded their infrastructure with large studio space & biggest foundry in India.
Today RAM SUTAR ART CREATIONS PVT. LTD. & RAM SUTAR FINE ARTS PVT. LTD. are one of the biggest firms to create monumental sculptures. The Clay modelling studio is located in Noida. The studio is in 2000 sq. mt . The biggest foundry set up in 8000 sq. mt. is located in Sahibabad, Ghaziabad. The foundry has the capacity to do 10,000 kg casting per day.
In 1999 'Anandvan Sculpture Garden' was created on Suraj Kund Bhadkhal lake road, where many sculptures are displayed in a very large landscaped area. It is open to the public to come and enjoy the sculpture garden.
